The first main historical advancement the U. S. legal courts was would be the Penitentiary Period (1790-1825) The Walnut Road Jail was America's initially real penitentiary in Phila.. The prison was ran by the Quakers who thought that all prison could be a place exactly where offenders should may make make amends with world and acknowledge responsibility because of their misdeeds. (Schmalleger, 2009) The Quakers aspects of philosophy included rehabilitation and deterrence which is still used to this time. Penance was the primary methods of rehabilitation because of this all of the offenders were placed into solitary confinement, so they can be still left to think of all their crimes. The Quakers even had excessive walls placed to let the offenders head out to obtain exercise daily, eventually handicrafts were allow into the prisons so offenders could operate their cells. In 1826 the European Penitentiary opened in Pittsburg and the Asian Penitentiary open in Cherry wood Hill, Pennsylvania three years after. (Schmalleger, 2009) These prisons were modeled after the Walnut street Prison with simple confinement, person cells and high impenetrable walls. It was the beginning of prisons in the U. S.

Another is the Mass Prison Era (1825-1878) 4 states constructed prisons for the Philadelphia unit but as the prison population began to expand building simple confinement was getting to high-priced so the so the New York Point out Prison was built in Red and the Auburn system created to save money by simply letting criminals congregate yet at the same time they have to remain silent or suffer corporal punishment. During this time an experiment was done on the Auburn penitentiary involving 83 men. These were sent in to solitary confinement on Christmas day of 1821 and were not released until 1823 and 1824. This experiment did not allow for exercise or handicrafts like the Philadelphia prison did.
